Problems to be solved are proper initialization of covariance matrix of landmark uncertainties and vehicle navigation uncertainties, accurate method of compensation for planetary rotation, and extent of onboard computation required; results of computer simulations are presented that give statistics of position and velocity error as functions of time and also as functions of instrument accuracy, orbital altitude, and initial landmark placement errors; simulations were carried out by recursive covariance equations of optimal linear filter theory; onboard calculation required by several methods is discussed.
