Investigation of roll damping of ships by means of water transfer in rectangular tank with free surface, as introduced by P.Watts at end of last century; influence of periodically varying moment on rolling motion is determined, starting from certain simplifying assumptions; magnitude of moment which is created by moving water mass in oscillating tank is found experimentally; influence of tank parameters on amplitude and phase of moment is ascertained; original water chamber used by Watts proved to be efficient and simple device.
