Repercussions of increasing complexity of warships on painting during construction, and further consequences that higher degree of specialization of officers and ratings have on painting in service; factors governing choice of paint in various parts of ship and review of research and development that has preceded their choice; it is concluded that paint finishes which will outlive ship are not yet available and first aim is to concentrate on finish that will last from refit to refit; design measures to eliminate rust raising detail, particularly that associated with fastenings, and accurate definition of required standards by process specifications are good launching points for attack on this problem.
