Results discussed show that contrarotating propeller is attractive from aspect of hydrodynamic performance, both for large, full bulk-carrier and for fine, high-speed cargo liner, where gains in propulsive efficiency of order of 7 and 12% respectively have been shown to be possible; these could doubtless be still further augmented; this allows for single main power plant; if shaft seals and gearing can be arranged so that contraturning screws for large bulk-carriers can be increased in diameter and run at lower revolutions per minute, improvement in propulsive efficiency will be added to that due to contraturning, and overall figure might be as high as 20%.
