Analytical approach is provided by soil mechanics in terms of distribution of pressure and expected settlement of subgrade; attempt is made to establish design criteria based on cohesive property, angle of internal friction of pavements to be used, allowable bearing capacity and deflection of subgrade; example calculations presented include examination of thinnest concrete pavement.
