Critical buckling stress of given truck frame side rail flange is dependent upon magnitude and stress distribution across flange; this distribution is function of method of load application, cross member spacing, and type of attachment between cross member and frame side rail; tests conducted during program at Midland Frame Div, Midland-Ross Corp, revealed that based upon specimens tested they could be made to carry 50% more load for same overall structural weight by selecting proper loading system and proper cross member spacing.
