Distinction made between "whistling" and "singing" as applied to noisy marine propellers; possible reason for "whistling"; propellers on Liberty type vessels dealt with; owing to incorrect dimensions, vibration responsible for many shaft failures in these vessels, may be coming from propeller; vessels could be operated at 75 rpm without danger of shaft failure provided propellers were designed to and operated at proper slip ratio.
