Completely air conditioned 17,600 ton U S Navy transport for 1500 men, first of three sister ships, was originally planned as luxury liner; length of 533 ft 9 in., breadth 73 ft, depth 49 ft; powered by high speed cross compound, double reduction geared turbine driving single screw; main turbines designed for normal output of 12,500 shp at 92 rpm.
