Until recently only practical method of inspecting rail joints has been removal of joint bars and visual inspection from side of rail; ultrasonic equipment was developed to permit rapid inspection from top without removal of joint bar; ultrasonic resonance and pulse methods were found suitable; former allows of simpler, battery operated equipment; details and use of such equipment.
