Three different optimization criteria considered for ionic propulsion systems; maximization of initial acceleration of space vehicle, minimization of total-mass-to-payload-mass ratio, and minimization of propellant mass required to refuel vehicles; production, acceleration, and neutralization of beams of singly ionized cesium ions also discussed simplified treatment of space charge neutralization of positive ion beam in region behind space vehicle.
