Railroads in United States consume about 25% of coal mined, and 10% of this consumption is used in shops and stations, heating of power plant, blacksmith shops, pumping stations, sand driers, cabooses, etc; there are no set specifications for railway fuels, and locomotives are designed to be adapted to such coals as are available; general classifications of coals for railroad use; factors in selection of railroad coals.
