Present lines of progress in airplane-engine design are examined and criticized and suggestions made for development in directions most likely to prove fruitful; argument in favor of water-cooled engine; very real need for air-cooled engine of small frontal area; importance of aircraft and engine being designed as one complete structure; value of concentration of effort on one type of engine such as Napier Lion; greatest advance is in application of supercharging to normal production type of engines; specifications for different engines.
