Rack vs adhesion locomotives for lignite-mine railroads of steep gradient; comparison of fireless and ordinary steam locomotives with three-phase cog-wheel drive, light electric d-c rack locomotives, and heavy electric adhesion locomotives; results show that adhesion drive for steep gradients is often cheaper than rack drive and has other advantages.
