Filling and emptying system of 600×84-ft Jonesville Lock will consist of wall intake manifolds, 10×10-ft longitudinal culvert in each wall, reverse-mounted tainter valves, sidewall ports, and sidewall outlet manifolds; hydraulic system was tested in 1 to 25-scale model; tests of 31 sidewall port arrangements resulted in adoption of 17 ports/culvert spaced 20 ft on centers with 8×8×2-ft deep recesses in lock chamber floor in front of each port; hawser stresses on 4- and 6-barge tows were within 5-ton limit during operation at normal and probable maximum heads and submergences.
