Use of rheostatic electric brakes in conjunction with standard vacuum controlled proportional air brakes for automatic braking of electric and diesel-electric locomotives; experimental system was developed for cases where rheostatic braking, although never inferior to standard air braking, cannot be used to advantage, if independently applied; experimental system was applied to British Railways 25 kv a-c locomotive to show substantial reduction in brake block wear.
