History of ocean barge transportation on Pacific Coast is traced from its beginnings after World War II through its current development; severe operating conditions prevalent in area are discussed; typical examples of major barge construction are described, and such features as size, speed hull form, structural design, deck gear and machinery are examined; towing vessels are touched on briefly, principally with regard to interrelationship between characteristics of tugs and barges; rational of barge transportation and its probable effect on future developments is discussed.
