Gear noise analysis system at Gleason Works, Rochester, NY, consists of portable tape recording system with transducers for storing noise, speed, and engine vacuum signals obtained during vehicle road tests, and playback sound analysis system that processes tape recording to provide graphic record of required noise information plotted against vehicle speed; interpretive translation method is required to convert sound pressure level graphs to equivalent human rating of axle gears; method currently used is rating conversion overlay determined by masking noise characteristics of test car.
