There exist four successful lift/thrust systems, tilt thrust, augmented thrust, all-vectored thrust, and dual propulsion; paper concerned with combination of short hover time and high cruise speed, is confined to all-vectored thrust and dual propulsion; parameters affecting selection of lift system are installed thrust/ weight ratio, fuel consumption, and hover requirements; comparison of lift-fan, turbofan and turbojet with regard to installed engine weight plus fuel for preselected hovering time; attempt is made to forecast areas in which improvements in thrust-to-weight (T/W) ratios can be made and levels that can be attained.
