Close support aircraft will be required to land on unprepared or semi-prepared fields; attention must be given to design criteria, load calculations and gear operating characteristics; to develop new criteria for this operation dynamic analysis was made of loads induced in U S Army observation airplane during landings on runways of varying degrees of roughness; tests of main gear on moving drop test rig at NASA Langley were conducted to provide check on analysis; description of analytical methods and comparison of analytical and test results.
