World's largest steering gear, introduced by Brown Bros., consists in principle of one or two pairs of hydraulic cylinders, whose rams operate tiller crosshead, keyed direct to rudder stock; power is supplied by constant-speed non-reversing motor driving variable-delivery pump which delivers oil under pressure to one or other of hydraulic cylinders; other gear known as trunk-piston type designed specially to meet case of vessels in which space available for steering gear is limited.
