In 1927 government of Costa Rica commissioned A.E.G. to electrify State Railway network, Ferrocarril al Pacifico, for total distance of 80 miles, with single-phase system at trolley-wire voltage of 15, 000 volts, 20 cycles; date of completion was fixed for end of May 1930; railroad connects capital of San Jose with seaport Puntarenas; greatest altitude is 3850 ft. above sea level; maximum gradient is 2.5 per cent.
