Ergonomic research shows that it is difficult for seat arrangement to give adequate comfort to both short and tall passengers, but careful planning can produce design coming much closer to perfection than has yet been achieved; extremes of heights in passengers can be accommodated successfully only by having simply-adjusted headrests and footrests; shin clearance rather than kneeroom determines minimum seat spacing, and even with special seat shaping, seat pitch cannot really be reduced beyond 2 ft 6 in.; guiding principles are outlined; examples of various styles and materials.
