In New York metropolitan region, airport access to Newark, Kennedy, and La Guardia airports is particularly critical; studies, carried out to explore possibilities of providing direct rail service to Kennedy Airport, led to Kennedy Airport Access Project, launched by Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Port Authority, and major airlines in combined effort to improve airport transportation; proposed Metropolitan Transportation Center, located underneath office buildings in east midtown Manhattan, would connect three subway lines, autos, taxis and buses, Grand Central Terminal, and Long Island Railroad to Kennedy air terminal; airline passengers could buy their tickets at Center, check their baggage, and take train directly to airport.
