Approximate theory is developed for study of hydroplaning tire by considering it as planing surface of small aspect ratio in extremely shallow water; results exhibit hydrodynamic behavior similar to that of hydroplaning pneumatic tires and indicate that tire hydroplaning phenomenon can be described from standpoint of inviscid hydrodynamics; analysis furnishes families of curves which can be considered to represent, qualitatively, start of hydroplaning and give qualitative guidance for avoiding undesirable hydroplaning condition.
