Review of present knowledge of re-entry physics and basic phenomena involved in interactions between body or vehicle and planetary atmosphere; calculation of mass loss due to heat absorption during re-entry as function of entry velocity; difficulties and peculiarities of high speed planetary entry problem are examined and areas where knowledge is limited and future research is needed are indicated.
