General dynamics convair is developing automatic assembly-in-orbit concept suitable for application to large structures, including antenna and solar concentrators, booms, space stations, re-entry bodies and lunar shelters; concept RATIO was originally conceived as method to build large radio telescope in orbit; main features of technique and assembly equipment which consists of electric stepping motors that move on floating rack frame and are equipped with screwdrivers to actuate screws or other captive fasteners; motors generate linear or rotary action to take panels from stacked position and assemble them.
