Analysis carried out includes criteria for site selection, constraints that limit selection, and resultant schedule of landing sites; arrival windows at Mars are computed for entire Metonic cycle from 1969 to 1984; 180-day effective lifetime for scientific landing package is assumed; since astronomical evidence for life on Mars suggests strong seasonal dependence of Martian biological activity, all launch opportunities are not equally promising; best opportunity for in situ studies of wave of darkening exists in 1969 opportunity.
