Following successful results from prototype system installed in converted ship. Fred Olsen and Co of Oslo are to adopt new system of fully mechanized cargo handling for all their dry cargo ships at present on order, and may eventually extend this to large ocean-going vessels on North Pacific and South Atlantic trades; structural alterations necessary involve providing side port combined with hatch at deck edge so that forklift trucks can operate in 'tween decks and transfer their loads to fork-lift trucks working on quay, at any state of tide; cargo in lower levels of ship is transferred to 'tween deck by other forklift trucks; this concept is discussed.
