Author's transonic flow airfoil theory is used to estimate transonic drag-rise and onset-of-separation-effects Mach numbers without reference to experimental results; simple comparative method is applied to series of airfoils, and results are analyzed to determine some of design features of importance in transonic flow; improvement to scheme gives results in good agreement with experiment for first appearance of shock waves and onset of separation effects; application to finite swept wings.
