Tsugaru Maru was built by Uraga Heavy Industries Ltd for service between Aomori on mainland and Hakodate on Hokkaido Island, and is of 8279 tons gross; length oa 130 m, breadth molded 17.90 m, design draft 5.20 m; space is provided for 1200 passengers; railway rolling stock is carried on main deck of vessel and is loaded and discharged through watertight stern door; 8 Kawasaki-MAN engines are 16-cyl units each rated at 1600 bhp at 750 rpm.
