Steepest-ascent method would be more usable if requirements for guessing desired increase in performance parameter and/or certain weighting factors were eliminated; method described eliminates guessing of these parameters; computer program is used to determine optimum trajectories for wide variety of rocket-powered vehicles in several mission options; convergence of iteration is good, and program can be used by engineers who are not familiar with calculus of variations.
