Surface mobility is critical problem in design of lunar roving vehicle; tests of vehicle models in frictional soils were undertaken at Defense Operations Div, Chrysler Corp; tests on grades produced anomalous results; conventional assumptions for predicting grade performance from results of testing at zero grade were as much as 20% in errors; results of tests which were run on simplified interface consisting of weighted grouser plate operating on frictional soil; goal of future program is development of general expression for predicting grade capability from performance data obtained on level soil.
