Detection and observation of satellite from satellite involves multitude of visual functions; its detection as lighter or darker area than background is function of contrast sensitivity; its shape recognition is function of visual acuity; perception of motion, of distances, and temporal factors of vision also are to be considered; computed visual ranges for assumed satellite for 100% probability of detection are shown; difficulties encountered when trying to make predictions on basis of laboratory studies.
