Construction program to collect and treat entire metropolitan area's sewage; 800-mgd pumping station and treatment plant on Deer Island, 2 hardrock tunnels under Boston Harbor, miles of interceptor sewers and tunnels and space-age electronic control system; overall metropolitan scheme collection and interceptor system and all area's sewage, along with considerable storm drainage, to 3 central headworks; concrete caisson containing pumping plant is described; dual-fuel radial engines drive nine 90-mgd centrifugal pumps.
