Preliminary orbit determination theories, based on Doppler observations alone, are developed; circular and elliptical preliminary orbits are treated; portions of classical spectroscopic binary star theory that are applicable to problem are pointed out; secular bulge perturbations, which accumulate during observation interval, are taken into account; it is important that they be included if theory is to have practical application; attention is directed to lunar and Martian artificial satellite orbits, but theories are applicable to satellites of other planets as well.
