Based on studies of aerodynamic and control requirements of VTOL aircraft and experience gained from installation of propellers on tail sitter Lockheed XFV-1 and Convair XFY-1 aircraft, it appeared that propeller driven VTOL aircraft could be designed with required performance and flying characteristics; optimum vehicle should have wing designed to operate at lift coefficient for maximum lift/drag ratio to obtain peak cruise performance; results of experiments on X-100 and M200 aircraft.
