Two concepts for airborne heading reference in terms of accuracy, complexity, reliability, and cost are examined -- airborne gyrocompassing capability and accurate gyrocompassing ground alignment to North and directional gyro, or cast-free-in-azimuth, airborne operation with computer memory of North; recommendations made on heading reference configuration and total dead reckoning navigation capability compatible with Doppler radar velocity sensing aboard transport aircraft of Mach 1, 2, 3 and up types.
