Practical concept for automating railroad under assumed operating and physical conditions is presented and field tests discussed that were conducted on distance of approximately 10 mi of railroad with considerable variations in both curvature and grade; railroad was designed to handle only freight that could be any bulk commodity; discussion covers method of remote control of locomotive from portable control unit and operation approaching highway grade crossing.
