Double ended five-ton permanent way crane described was designed for handling rails in tunnels where headroom is restricted; crane car is used for setting and resetting rails, switches, and frogs, and also for self-loading and unloading 150 lb/yd rail; it was also equipped for general purpose lifting up to five tons at not less than 26 ft radius; propulsion equipment and main motor-driven air compressor operate from 600 v d-c third rail supply, using 23-cell lead-acid battery regulated at 51 v for control power; crane movements are powered from water cooled 4-cyl diesel-alternator set carried under car.
