In Thingdon iron mine at Finedon, horse haulage was superseded by use of Diesel locomotives for gathering purposes; main endless rope haulage driven electrically at surface; haulage system; mine cars; track; 5 Diesel locomotives in use; effect of exhaust on ventilation; performance; working costs of Diesel locomotives; maintenance; after 12 yr experience of Diesel locomotives underground, operating under arduous conditions, there can be no reason to doubt safety, reliability or economy of this form of haulage when mine conditions permit its use.
