Problems reviewed, most emphasis being laid on aerodynamic and stress limitations; it is concluded that major conflict in design of gas turbine is conflict between Mach number and stress; in metallurgy there is much yet to be achieved in developing materials to withstand creep and fatigue, oxidation and erosion at ever higher stresses and temperatures; in aerodynamics compressible flow is greatest field of research.
