Prototype XM656 cargo truck is first of nine designed for U S Army; test runs included running vehicle over highways, through swamps, over hilly back country, through loose sand, and over road conditions found anywhere in world; outstanding characteristics of truck are its improved cross-country mobility, light weight (25,815 lb GVW), multifuel power plant and reduced need for maintenance; truck has full power steering, power brakes, six-speed automatic torque converter transmission, and can swim, using air-inflated seals and internal air pressure; design permits transport by aircraft and air-drop of truck, using parachutes; specifications.
