Method is presented which adapts readily to digital programming; prime mover which may be gas turbine or reciprocating internal combustion engine, hydraulic torque converter, and/or mechanical transmission, comprising vehicle drive train, are transformed into numerical equivalents; performance prediction deals with engine-converter compatibility, converter range performance, and lockout or direct drive performance; computer transforms engine data into equation form by curve fitting, predicts optimum shift point as intersection of net tractive effort in converter drive with net tractive effort in direct drive, calculates, stores, interpolates, and prints complete set of data; bus or fire engine serves as example.
