State of knowledge of lunar surface is considered from engineering viewpoint and variety of soil or rock profiles to shallow depths outlined; engineering properties of soil and rock materials are defined arbitrarily in terms of idealized mechanical behavior; attempt is made to establish ranges of material behavior in terms of quantitative properties, and classes of soil engineering problems that might arise with respect to operations on lunar surface are examined; consideration is given to suitable simple experiments that may be conducted from spacecraft on lunar surface for purpose of measuring its quantitative properties.
