St Louis-San Francisco railroad constructed reinforced concrete, open bottom underground pits housing valves and hose lines used for supplying Diesel passenger locomotives with water and fuel oil during station stops; locomotives can be serviced while still coupled to trains; pipe lines carrying fuel oil, and another for conveying water, extend underground from pumphouse and are brought to each pit from opposite sides.
