Three of Hiller's Model 1100, OH-5A prototypes passed halfway mark in their respective evaluation programs at Army aviation test facilities in Alabama and California; OH-5A was first of 3 contenders to start 6-mo evaluation that will determine which of newly developed LOH (light observation helicopter) will replace Army's present 2 light helicopters (Hiller OH-23 and Bell OH-13) and its fixed-wing observation craft (Cessna 0-1); all 3 helicopters are powered by 250-shp Allison T63 turbine developed for LOH program; weighing only 134 lb, its takeoff power rating is 240 lb-ft torque at 6000 rpm; details of SAS (stability augmentation system).
