Paper describes developments that have taken place during present decade, and way in which changing patterns of trade have been accommodated by BP Tanker Co, Ltd; divergence of tanker design between general product carrier and crude oil vessel is discussed, together with particular problems that have arisen in cargo systems of these different types of vessel; importance of cargo integrity and ship safety during cargo handling operations is noted, and that progress made in associated systems has tended towards increased safety, easier operation and at same time reduced personnel requirements.
