Paper discusses principle of operation of General Motors (GM) roller traction drive, and dynamometer test results illustrating effect of speed and torque on efficiency, reduction ratio, traction coefficient, and noise pattern; unit is planetary drive with preloaded, barrel roller planets for transmittal of power; torque-actuated preloading mechanism prevents slippage, improves life and efficiency; drive unit is being used for main propulsion of GM oceanographic submarine deep ocean work boat.
