U S Naval Oceanographic Office has employed five manned submersibles (PC3-B, ALVIN, ALUMINAUT, STAR III, and DEEPSTAR-4000) in various research and surveying tasks; work performed has been varied in attempt to evaluate these vehicles as surveying platforms and to establish operational techniques; no one submersible has been best and none worst, but all have inherent desirable as well as undesirable design and operational characteristics; future submersibles should incorporate best of these features.
