Basic operating principle of adaptive control function is that sums of properly modulated, conventional linear feedback and feedforward signals provide control inputs needed to obtain specified responses in number of output variables of linear controlled element; adaptive control function approach is applied to design of adaptive, lateral stability augmentation system for hypothetical, manned, lifting-body, entry vehicle; objective of application is to effect considerable improvement in lateral-directional handling qualities of vehicle; data from simulation of system demonstrate its effectiveness.
